What to see and do in Rome during the Christmas holidays
If you are planning to visit Rome during this period, we point out some things that you absolutely cannot miss!
Some places in Rome, already magical in history and artistic beauty, during the holidays become even more beautiful to visit!
In these pre-Christmas days, we were able to admire these places during our e-bike tours, so we point out the absolutely unmissable ones.
We hope that despite the COVID, for Christmas Rome can give us the emotions that each year distinguish the city
1. The famous Christmas trees
The tall Christmas tree, now famous and famous throughout the world, will be installed in Piazza Venezia.
This year it is a natural fir of type Abies Nordmanniana, about 23 meters high and with a diameter of 12 meters at the base of the canopy, illuminated by 100 thousand LED lights and 800 spheres in four colors.
Even more fascinating is the tree in Piazza San Pietro: in the background you can admire the majestic Basilica with the dome designed by Brunelleschi.
Finally, we have the Christmas tree that overlooks Piazza del Popolo: another suggestion not to be missed among the lights and the atmosphere it offers, on evening walks.
2. A walk under the lights of Via Del Corso
The famous shopping street of Rome dresses up every year.
A rain of low-consumption lights gives young and old emotions that warm the heart
An always starry sky will illuminate your stroll through the shops.
Last year the installation was called “Roma by Light Acea 2021”
“Despite not very good weather, the heir to Spelacchio lit up the square in the historic centre of the capital among thousands of Romans and tourists. 23 metres high with 800 balls, the fir tree has a diameter of 25 and 30 centimetres. New for this 2021 are 17 giant parcels placed at the base of the tree symbolising the sustainable development goals that the United Nations (UN) International Organisation intends to pursue” (da www.romatoday.it).
A Christmas in the name of light and sustainability.
3. The illuminations of Cartoon Network in Via dei Condotti
Continue the walk in via dei Condotti, another of the most beautiful streets in Rome at Christmas.
Here you will find a completely different kind of illumination, compared to Via del Corso.
Like last year, these lights are curated by Cartoon Network and represent the most popular cartoon characters and shows of the channels of the well-known television station.
The characters are inserted in the structure of the lights to form classic style chandeliers, in line with the elegant style of the street.
4. St. Peter’s Square: the nativity scene and the Christmas tree
The nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square and the tall Christmas tree, decorated with lights and golden balls, come every year from the northern regions (Trentino and Veneto), which give the Holy Father the most beautiful trees.
The Nativity scene is made up of 23 natural height wooden figures. Some of the characters represent ancient characters and crafts, typical of the country of origin.
5. New Year’s Eve at Circo Massimo and Lungotevere Aventino: the feast of Rome
The Roman New Year is now confirmed not only to be a concert in the square, but is a series of engaging events, for young and old, located in various locations.
The Rome Film Fest is a 24 hour music, art, street art, performance, light design and citizen involvement!
For this year, all the events, generally located in various squares and streets of the city between the Lungotevere Aventino and Circo Massimo, must still be confirmed.
The most popular points of interest are Piazza della Bocca della Verità, Orange Garden, Tiber Island, Via Petroselli (Marcello Theater), Ponte Palatino, Lungotevere Aventino, Circo Massimo.
6. The Christmas markets in Rome
The Christmas markets in Rome create an enchanted Christmas atmosphere, especially at night, when the lights of the stalls softly colour the ‘eternal city’: a perfect backdrop for finding original gift ideas, tasting roasted chestnuts and typical products from some Italian regions, accompanied by steaming cups of hot chocolate or energetic glasses of mulled wine.
In the background, there is the classic music of the pipers. The most famous Christmas market is the one in Piazza Navona, but you will find many others scattered throughout the city.
